In the past, I have had college professors encourage me to start a blog as a means of honing my skills as a writer. Their assertion was that blogging encourages an individual to write on a regular basis and also introduces writers to the idea of putting their work out there for the entire world to read. Chances are that next to no one will be reading anything you write, but that’s the reality of so many published authors. So, in some ways, blogging is a reality check for aspiring writers. Most people will never read what you write, but that’s not the point. I only hope my writing professors were correct, and that by keeping a blog, I will be more fastidious in my writing habits!

One of my writing professors also said that one should always share the pieces of writing he or she feels least comfortable sharing. In other words, if you are privately very proud of something you’ve written, but the thought of letting others read it causes your stomach to do cartwheels, than that is the piece of writing you should submit for publication, read to your friends, or publish online. This piece of advice is often hard to live up to, but I think that is the point!
